Money Helper’s tips for three key finance topics

Getting your head around the world of money can be tough. But, once you’ve got the fundamentals down, everything gets that bit easier.

We’ve covered many different topics this past year but there are plenty more resources out there that could help make mastering your money that bit easier.

We caught up with the MoneyHelper team, ran by one of the 2025 Fintech Pledge’s lead members the Money & Pensions Service on a few extra topics and some MoneyHelper blogs that can help you tackle these problems:

Debt advice: Consumers can use MoneyHelper’s Debt Advice Locator tool to find free and confidential debt advice online, over the phone or near to where you live. You’ll need to prepare before you go or attend a session so make sure you have all your relevant paperwork such as wage slips, pension statements, benefits and tax credit letters in one place. There are different advantages to different types of debt advice, online may work better for some looking for quick anonymous support, while face-to-face can be good if you’re feeling vulnerable. Check out MoneyHelper for the low-down.

Mortgages and bad credit:  If you’re thinking about buying your first home, moving house or you want to remortgage, you might be worried about how you could be impacted if you have a poor credit rating. When banks and mortgage providers decide whether to offer you a mortgage, they take lots of different factors into account. Money Helper summarises what impact these can have and for how long on their blog

How to split rent or bills: When you move into rented accommodation, it’s important that you know who is on the tenancy agreement and decide how you are going to split the rent. You could divide it equally by the number of tenants or assign different amounts of rent for each room. Less common, unless you’re living with a partner, is splitting rent based on income. For bills, you’re also going to need to work out how to split them fairly between you and your housemates. You can learn more, including what to do when someone doesn’t pay towards your bills on MoneyHelper.

That’s everything for now. Keep an eye on the blog as we’ll be posting more articles to help you master your money.
